Welcome to Politics War Room with James Carville and Al Hunt
We are here to offer a critical look at the 2024 election cycle from our seasoned perspective.
Hi, it's James Carville and Al Hunt. This presidential election will be the most critical of our lifetime; the stakes are humongous. News and events will come at you fast. You need a venue to make sense of it all.
That's where we come in. Our careers have been hard-wired to American politics for decades. We talk to the election's stakeholders every day. And we would like to share what we learn with you.
We are different: one a career journalist, the other a leading political strategist for more than four decades; a transplanted Yankee and a proud son of the South; Wake Forest versus LSU. We share much more in common: a real mutual respect, a strong belief in the importance of politics, a deep fear that another Trump presidency poses an existential threat to America, and we both married above ourselves.
We will offer special insights in a three-times-a-week Substack newsletter, Politics WarRoom. For $10 a month, or $100 a year. Each week, you will get, exclusively, Hunt's People & Politics column, Carville Uncensored on the political landscape and the dangers of Trump. As a bonus, you get their weekly Podcast, Politics WarRoom.
When the spirit moves -- perhaps early and often -- there also will be instant reactions to big events, primarily politics with a little history and sports thrown in.
James, of course, managed the 1992 Bill Clinton campaign, defeating an elected incumbent Republican president for the first time in 60 years. Every day, he talks to candidates, campaign managers, pollsters, and strategists. He has unparalleled instincts and a feel for American politics.
"James Carville and Al Hunt are bringing 100 years of political and journalistic experience to Substack," "In this most critical election year it would be wise to pay attention to their observations," says Sean Wilentz, the eminent Princeton historian.
Al has covered the past twelve Presidential elections as a reporter, columnist and television pundit. He directed news coverage of five of these elections, three for the Wall Street Journal and two for Bloomberg News. He possesses a keen knowledge of politics and the ebbs and flows of the news media.
"Al Hunt is one of shrewdest analysts of American politics," says Jill Abramson, former Executive Editor of the New York Times. “His and James Carville's storehouse of knowledge is incredible, and they're entertaining to boot."
JOhn Drendel from Montreal Quebec. I have a question for your podcast. The DNC has given up on Texas for years, despite Beto's narrow defeat in the senate race 6 years ago There is not a lot of polling on the Allred-Cruz race, but an August 21 poll by Houston U put Allred only 2 points behind. What is your intuition regarding Allred's chances ? Have you any thoughts about the criticism from Texas Dems regarding Alred's low-profile campaign style -- he's avoided the all-out rural campaign strategy Beto O'Rourke championed in an attempt to hold down rural margins, in favor of meet and greets in urban centers, while Harris and Walz are following the Beto game plan in Penn and Georgia. Given the dramatic consequences of the Texas abortion ban, shouldn't the presidential campaign make an appearance, if only to highlight nationally the abortion issue and maybe give a push to Allred ? Thanks, John
Seems like an easy layup to remind younger voters about the first weeks of trumps presidency. He didn't really seem to have any idea what he wanted to do, except go after anybody that had anything to do with climate change. And he did that really the whole 4 years. Yet we never hear that at all. Seems like a good issue to put out to the youth vote he seems to. be losing ground on.
